Randall Munroe, xkcd [4&5&6/6]

So the last few bits and pieces are finally up. They’re pretty short, because like I said, by the end of the day I felt terrible about taking up so much time and space.

Here we go!

Randall Munroe, xkcd [3/6]

Yet another Randall Munroe mp3. This one is a lot harder to make out at the end because I backed up a bit. I felt kind of bad about standing RIGHT next to him all the time with a mic in his face because first of all, it’s creepy, and second, other people wanted to get near him.

Just to clarify, it starts with him talking about police and permits again, and ends with him signing an iPhone on the screen (but not really).

This mp3 has my favorite line yelled by some guy in the crowd–

“Great, we’ve been hacked in real life.”

new mp3s tomorrow

I’ve been a bit busy the past two days travelling from Boston to New Jersey. Public transportation is not friendly to internet access. I managed to transcribe the last three worthwhile mp3s of Randall Munroe. They will be up tomorrow after I get out of work. I’ll upload the rest untranscribed as crowd noise. They’re not really worth going through to pull out single lines, but if you want to get an idea of the atmosphere, they’re pretty helpful.

After I’m done with these, I plan on doing MZD, and then maybe some old footage of Bruce Campbell or Tori Amos.

Thanks for reading!

quick note–

If you haven’t already read it, my article about the meetup can be found here on the website for Journalism Students’ Online News Service (JSONS).

It’s nearly broken 500 page views, while every other article is hovering around 50. This makes me really excited, and my editor somewhat confused.

Also, I know it gives me a different last name. Name changes are terrible and time-consuming, but rest assured, I did in fact write that article, and transcribe these mp3s.

 Thanks for reading.

Randall Munroe, xkcd [2/6]

Hi again! I finished this one faster than I expected (mostly because I want to finish with old audio before I go record new people).
Format is the same as last time– crowd comments in brackets, clarifications and unintelligible bits in italics, text broken up rather arbitrarily. Comment if you can hear something that I didn’t.

Someone named Liryon actually has a video of part of this mp3 on Youtube. And you can see me in it! I’m the girl standing to the left of Randall, holding the tape recorder, obviously. The first time I saw it, it was very creepy and avant-garde to watch a recording of me recording someone else. Watching the video is fun because I can finally see the people who are shouting out random comments.

Randall Munroe, xkcd [1/6]

The first mp3 of Randall Munroe. Crowd comments are in brackets, clarifications or indecipherable statements are in italics, and each new voice begins on a new line. My own personal comments are in bold brackets (there are only two in this transcription). I’ve broken the text down into segments based off particular questions. On the tape, there’s no real distinction, but I felt it fit best this way.

Any transcribing errors are entirely my own fault, so go ahead and comment on mistakes, or if you can make out what the guy says about the permit.

Enjoy!

hiya everybody!

Hi! So this is my new blog. It’s very pretty- it’s got bananas! I love bananas! [edit: Okay, I love bananas, but unfortunately the text was a bit hard to read. So now I have trees.] I’m Lily, and a future journalist living in Boston. This blog will be full transcriptions of various speakers I attend and interviews I conduct, as well as the mp3s. Right now on my computer, I have partial transcriptions and mp3s of Randall Munroe, xkcd creator, speaking at the xkcd meetup in Cambridge. I also have mp3s of Mark Z Danielewski, author of House of Leaves and Only Revolutions, answering questions at a book signing in Cambridge.

In the future, I will definitely have at least a few minutes of talking with Tori Amos, as well as anyone else I manage to track down in the Boston area.

It’s getting a bit late now, but I will start with the Munroe transcriptions in the morning.

Thank you for reading!
